You may not realise it, but there are likely magnets in every room in your house. Neodymium magnets were developed in the 1980s and with them came the ability to make small magnets minute without losing magnetic power. This has led to a myriad of electronic devices using Rare Earth magnets within their electronic systems. Audio equipment, speakers, computers and power tools are just a few examples.

Magnets have also become a popular addition to many items of furniture. Cabinet Makers and Furniture Designers have embraced the magnet as a neat and easily concealed closing mechanism.

Magnets in the kitchen

Most contemporary kitchens will use magnets to hold soft closing drawers and cabinets closed. The beauty of the magnet is in its ability to stay hidden. Magnets can be embedded into the door or doorframe, keeping a streamlined and artful finish to the cabinetry.

Magnets are likewise used on kitchen drawers, providing gentle resistance so that drawers remain neatly closed when not in use. Magnetic tape such as the super strong Neodymium tape are frequently used for this purpose. The amount of magnetic tape can be easily adjusted until the desired hold is achieved.

Magnetic knife holders are yet another popular magnet in the kitchen. There are several options available including wood, stainless steel and painted steel. They come with all the necessary parts to install the magnetic knife holder on the wall.

It is easy to see why these have become so popular as they provide a safe and hygienic way to store knives. Knives also remain in better condition as they are not rubbing up against one another in the draw or grinding past hidden debris in a knife block.

Let's not forget the star of the show. When it comes to kitchen magnets you can’t look past the humble fridge magnet! Available in many forms, fridge magnets are available as Pin Magnets, Button Magnets, Clip Magnets and much more.

There is nothing more satisfying than a well organised system whether it be in the home or the office. The fridge is the perfect place to keep the latest information, bills, shopping lists and notes. All held in place by a trusty fridge magnet.

Magnets in this 3-5kg range are the perfect size and strength for making magnetic spice racks. Neodymium disc magnets are the best option for this type of application due to their broad flat surface and low profile. We are often contacted by customers looking for guidance on how to choose the best magnet for this purpose.

FAQ

What are the best uses for magnets with 3-5kg pull force?

Magnets of this size are sought after by customers of all types, from engineers through to artists. The beauty of this strength of magnet is that they are still easy to handle. Although they are strong enough to perform well, they are not too strong to handle with confidence. As magnets become bigger and more powerful it becomes increasingly hazardous.

Magnets in the 3-5kg range are great for many home DIY applications. Magnetic fly screens NZ are one of the most common enquiries we receive. For some customers magnetic tape is a great solution however for others small Neodymium magnets are the best option. This largely depends on where the fly screen is being utilised.

A fly screen on a house window is the perfect place to try the reliable Magnifix tape. However if you are creating a fly screen for a campervan, caravan or other vehicle then stitching some neodymium ring magnets into the flyscreen may be a more suitable option. The Pull Force listed for each magnet is based on lifting 10mm thick steel from a horizontal surface. Magnets on a vertical surface (of 10mm thick steel) are generally able to hold around only 30% of the pull force listed in the product description. This is due to the effects of gravity and the lack of friction between the surface and the shiny magnet. Read More
