Cylinder

Cylinder shaped magnets are defined by their dimensions; the diameter of a cylinder is smaller than the height dimension. Known by several terms including rod magnets, tube magnets, and cylinder magnets, this shape of magnet has several useful attributes. There is a greater amount of magnetic material between the two poles than is present in a disc magnet. They are therefore able to produce a much more penetrating magnetic field.

Neodymium cylinder magnets are certainly the most popular type of permanent magnet of this shape. To ensure we meet the needs of our customers we also keep stock of Ferrite and Samarium Cobalt cylinders too. These more traditional forms of magnet are weaker in magnetic power than Neodymium however they offer superior resistance to corrosive elements. Ferrite and Samarium Cobalt also have a greater operating temperature range. They are able to tolerate high temperatures without losing magnetic power or sustaining permanent damage to the magnet.

Uses for Cylinder Magnets

Neodymium cylinder magnets are commonly used for guiding and detecting equipment. The longer magnetic field produced by a cylinder magnet can penetrate deeper into other materials. An example of this is the traditional Stud Finder which is able to detect metal struts beneath the wall surface. The narrow and concentrated magnetic field produced by magnetic cylinders enables them to be used for highly sensitive electronic devices. Security sensors and warning systems often incorporate cylindrical magnets for this reason.

Rare Earth cylinder magnets are the key component of Magnetic Separator Bars and Tubes. Encased within a food-grade stainless steel exterior is a series of super strong Neodymium cylinder magnets. These devices are a crucial element of many industrial operations particularly food production and filtration systems as they remove harmful contaminants. Without the help of cylinder magnets, minute metal fragments (often through the production process itself) are able to contaminate food products.

Cylinder magnets are also ideal for embedding into objects to create a means of holding or joining two objects together. The circular profile allows them to be easily inserted into a predrilled hole to create a flush exterior surface. The elongated nature of the cylinder shape ensures they are easy to grip and maneuver by hand. This coupled with their super strong magnetic power provides a useful magnetic whiteboard accessory.

FAQ

What applications are suited to cylinder magnets?
Cylinder magnets are suited to a number of applications that utilise their targeted and penetrating magnetic field. Magnetic cylinders are a common component of many products to ensure the correct and precise alignment of moving parts.
Security doors, vaults, and electric gates require super strong cylinder magnets to ensure the accurate positioning of parts. Magnets guide the moving parts into position before locks are able to engage. For information about Cylinders or any other shape of magnet, take a look at our FAQ and Knowledge base articles.

How strong are cylinder magnets?
Cylinder magnets are far stronger than Disc magnets of the same diameter. This is due to the larger amount of magnet material present between the two poles. A more intense and narrow magnetic field is produced and this extends further from the flat end of the physical magnet. Neodymium cylinders are available in a range of sizes and grades to enable our customers to choose the magnet that best meets their needs. If your space is limited it may be appropriate to source a magnet in a higher grade to achieve a stronger hold.

The Pull Force listed for each magnet is based on lifting 10mm thick steel from a horizontal surface. Magnets on a vertical surface (of 10mm thick steel) are generally able to hold around only 30% of the pull force listed in the product description. This is due to the effects of gravity and the lack of friction between the surface and the shiny magnet. Read More
