Axially magnetized cylinders like this one have a shape and a far-reaching magnetic field through the circular ends that is useful in Reed Switches and other detection equipment like Alarms and Security Systems. The cylindrical shape enables them to attract and then slide toward metal or electromagnetic fields to either open or close a circuit and cause activation of a system or an alert. Encased in a hermetically sealed container or switch housing, their operation is guaranteed almost indefinitely and in all conditions. They are found in specialist engineering applications that utilize their High-temperature resistance and are also used in some specialist medical products.
