Rare Earth magnets are the strongest magnets available and have greatly influenced the design and manufacture of many of the world's commercial and consumer products since the proliferation of Neodymium in the 1980s. The standard Nickel coating on these powerful magnets is a cost-effective way of protecting the brittle Neodymium material in banal atmospheric conditions, however, extended periods of exposure to the fluctuations of the weather will eventually lead to corrosion and a breakdown of the Nickel coating, allowing the Neodymium core to deteriorate and eventually fail. To overcome this problem, AMF supplies a range of magnets that have a Black Epoxy coating. The Epoxy seals and protects the encased magnet from the elements and exposure to wind, abrasion, chemicals, salt air and enables magnetic hold to be sustained in underwater applications, harsh atmospheric conditions and general outdoor use. Epoxy coated magnets, like this axially magnetised Neodymium block, have greater durability and extended working life. This makes them an ideal alternative to nickel coated magnets in atmospheres of high humidity, marine environments and for numerous industrial and agricultural uses. The higher than average N50 Grade Neodymium material in this magnet will, to some extent, compensate for the reduction in magnetic strength that the Epoxy coating creates by widening the air gap between ferrous and magnetic surfaces.

The Pull Force listed for each magnet is based on lifting 10mm thick steel from a horizontal surface. Magnets on a vertical surface (of 10mm thick steel) are generally able to hold around only 30% of the pull force listed in the product description. This is due to the effects of gravity and the lack of friction between the surface and the shiny magnet. Read More
